What is a Credit Union?
A credit union is a not-for-profit, democratically-operated financial
institution. This means that DEXSTA is owned by its "members." The
initial $5 deposit is a "share" in DEXSTA. Any profits that are made
are returned to the member/owners in the form of better interest rates,
free services, low or no fees on products etc. Members elect the
volunteer board of directors and attend the annual meeting. Banks and
other financial institutions do not offer these benefits.
Some other benefits include:
- Free, interest earning checking with no minimum balance
- No-fee credit cards
- Discount automobile insurance & real estate program
- Free financial planning and educational seminars
- A "service" environment versus a "sales" environment
As a member of the National Association of Federal Credit Unions,
DEXSTA's belief is that people are more important than dollars. DEXSTA
supports social and community programs to improve the quality of life
in New Castle County. Credit Unions are cooperatives - the central goal
is to place service and benefits to members above all else.
Since 1989, credit unions have been #1 in satisfaction and
trust, in a survey by the American Banker/Gallup Poll. In addition,
credit unions give you that small town feeling. DEXSTA treats our
members like family, not like customers. DEXSTA is small enough to know
you but large enough to serve ALL your financial needs.
